As graphics have improved and narrative-driven gameplay has taken hold, video games have, for the most part, become a lot more serious over the past decade or so. The Stanley Parable bucks this trend though, with its writing serving as a delicious throwback to some of the hilarious and self-aware point-and-click adventure games from the late eighties and early nineties. The reveal of that decaying art deco utopia under the sea is one of the great gaming moments. BioShock is a triumph of atmosphere and storytelling, a game that weaponised philosophy. The combat, a dance between plasmid powers and clunky firearms, was fantastic, but it’s the world Andrew Ryan built, and the story of its downfall, that burns itself into your memory. A genuine, industry-shaking moment that proved video game stories could be more than just excuses for shooting.
Cyberpunk 2077, like any good sci-fi, uses its story to ask big questions about our own world and the failings of our society. In this gritty RPG, high-octane action and dark, thought-provoking themes go hand in hand. Elden Ring has only gone from strength to strength since launching back in 2022.
